Steps to Recovery

How does the Program Work?

When you are admitted to the unit you will receive (within 2-3 days) a pedometer, a Duke blue shoelace, a plastic footprint, and some tickets. Attach your shoelace to your IV pole. Wear your pedometer when you walk, then clip it to your shoelace and attach it to your IV pole when you are done.

How do I earn footprints?

For every 5 laps walked (up and back = 1 lap), please write your name, room #, and date on a ticket. Put your ticket into the box located in the Hope Lodge Connection. Tickets will be picked up each day and your footprints will be delivered to your room. Put a ticket in for every 5 laps walked (5 laps = 1 ticket, 10 laps = 2 tickets, etc.).

Do laps need to be accumulated on a daily basis or can they be accumulated over time?

It does not matter how long it takes to reach an increment of five. Example: If you walked two laps one day and three the next day, that counts as five laps and you earn a footprint.

How do I receive special tokens?

When 25, 50, 75, and 100 footprints earned, a token will be awarded to signify the milestone that was crossed. Please follow the same procedure that you used for the plastic footprints, but indicate 25, 50, 75, or 100 on your ticket.

Can my child ride a tricycle?

Riding a tricycle is fine and will count for earning footprints. Just use the same parameters.  Pushing your baby in a stroller also counts for earning footprints.

What is a "SuperStepper"? How do I become one?

When you accumulate 50 footprints, you are a "SuperStepper!" We will take a photo of you with your footprints and make a t-shirt for you. We also feature all of our "SuperSteppers" in the newsletter.
