Dr. Katy Peters has a background in both neurology and cancer biology, that lends itself perfectly to the field of neuro-oncology. Her medical and scientific career started at Stanford University in the Medical Scientist Training Program and she received a MD and PhD in Cancer Biology. After completing a residency in neurology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine along with a fellowship in cognitive neurosciences, Katy joined the PRTBTC as a fellow in neuro-oncology. In 2009, she joined the PRTBTC as a faculty member and is currently an assistant professor of neurology. She actively sees and cares for patients with primary brain tumors. Her research interests include health-related quality of life in patients with brain cancer, cognitive dysfunction in patients with brain cancer and other malignancies, and physical function and activity in patients with brain cancer. While she actively runs clinical trials for the treatment of primary brain tumors, she is keenly interested in studies that focus on the improvement of health-related quality of life and cognition for patients with brain tumors. In addition to her time devoted to clinical activities and research, she is very active in teaching medical school students, residents, fellows, and advanced practice providers. She serves as the program director for the fellowship program in neuro-oncology at the PRTBTC. She is a collaborative member of the Duke Cancer Institute and Cancer Control Population Sciences at Duke. She is board certified physician by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the United Council of Neurologic Subspecialties for neuro-oncology.
