How to Contribute

Thank you for your interest in becoming a cord blood donor! Donating cord blood is a safe procedure that will not harm you or your baby in any way.

How Do I Become a Cord Blood Donor?

If you would like to donate your baby's cord blood, please contact us at the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank as early as 28-32 weeks of pregnancy. We will add you to our donor list and we will arrange for a CCBB nurse to meet you at your obstetrician’s office to explain the donation process and answer your questions. If you cannot meet with a member of our team before coming to the hospital, another option is to inform your labor and delivery nurse, when you arrive at the hospital, of your wish to become a cord blood donor.

The donor process includes

  • Reviewing and signing a consent form stating your voluntary agreement to donate;
  • Answering some medical history questions;
  • Allowing a sample of your blood to be drawn for infectious disease testing. This sample is drawn at the same time as those taken for routine admission to labor and delivery.

When you arrive at the hospital to deliver, inform your labor and delivery nurse that you are, or wish to be, a cord blood donor and they will notify the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank on-site team member.
