Carolinas Cord Blood Bank Team Medical Director - Joanne Kurtzberg, MD - Dr. Kurtzberg is the medical director of the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank. She is a pioneer in the field of cord blood transplants and has performed one fourth of all cord blood transplants worldwide. Dr. Kurtzberg also directs the 16 bed Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Duke where many of the children receive cord blood transplants. Co-Investigator - Elizabeth Livingston, MD - is a maternal fetal medicine specialist on staff at Duke. As part of the Cord Blood Team, Dr. Livingston helps identify moms who can be possible donors and she delivers some of the babies of these moms. Administrative Director - Ellen Tvrdy is the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank administrative director. She works closely with Dr. Kurtzberg and the CCBB team overseeing all aspects of this public cord blood bank. Collection Specialists - Wendy Veasey is the Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator of the team of collection specialists at each participating hospital. Clinical research nurses and research technicians make up the Collections Team. The Team educates the public about cord blood banking, obtain consents and medical histories from donors, and ultimately collect cord blood. Laboratory Personnel - After collection, laboratory personnel process the cord blood units and perform various blood tests to ensure the cord blood is suitable for transplantation. After processing, they freeze and store the cord blood until it is needed for transplantation. Joint Programs and Personnel Look Forward Program - June Allison, RN, CPON is a Nurse Coordinator/ Clinician on the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit. She coordinates the Look Forward Program for the CCBB where some of the infants whose moms were donors are followed through review of their pediatric charts. Ethics Project - Dr. Jeremy Sugarman is the principal investigator for, "Ethics Activities in the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank." In this role, he is in charge of evaluating the informed consent process for donation of umbilical cord blood to the bank. Dr. Sugarman is a physician and medical ethicist at Duke University Medical Center who works on ethical issues related to medical care and research. Duke, Durham Regional, UNC, Western Wake, Rex, and Women’s Hospital of Greensboro Labor and Delivery Teams - The Labor and Delivery Teams are an integral part of the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank. They notify collection specialists when donors are ready to deliver, hand the placenta and cord to a collection specialist after delivery, and help educate moms about cord blood donation. |
